We have played there several times in the past. It is a big festival with thousands of people enjoying the beauty of Bryan Park in northside Richmond. Last year we enjoyed having a belly dancer accompany our set.

We had a good time and we fully expect to be gracing the stage there again next year. From their website:

Witness to Innocence is the nation’s only organization composed of, by and for exonerated death row survivors and their loved ones.  These individuals are actively engaged in the struggle to end the death penalty, challenging the American public to grapple with the problem of a fatally flawed criminal justice system that sends innocent people to death row.



A very worthy cause that Unity Sound was very happy to support. Another great thing about this gig was that it was held at the Rosslyn Conference and Retreat Center which is a really beautiful 150 acre site that overlooks the James River in Henrico County, just west of Richmond, VA.

We have got a bunch of new tunes in the works. Some new originals and some new arrangements of classic songs done with the Unity Sound twist. This will be our first cd featuring the amazing guitar of Wylie “Crazy Horse” Jones. I am looking forward to hearing what Wylie brings forward.

We hope to have the new cd out by the end of summer at the latest. Hopefully this new one will be released at the Carytown Watermelon Festival as the last two were.

Look for this one to be a mixture of songs and dubs like the last two discs.

Also we are thinking about remastering our first cd and rereleasing it, since it is currently unavailable. Here we are playing the main stage at the 2010 Carytown Watermelon Festival. This is an original song called “Roll a Likkle Spliff.” This is our second year playing the Watermelon Festival. Estimates of 100,000 people wandering through Carytown is quite a sight.

I also enjoyed the hula-hoopers that were dancing in front of the stage. We also sold a bunch of our new cds.

When we got there, I realized that the gig called for us to keep control of our volume. In my experience, many bands have a problem with being too loud. It is a lot easier to play loud than it is too play quietly.

I am proud to report that we were able to keep control of our volume for the whole gig and avoid the volume gradually creeping up through the gig.

So when you book us, we are able to play at a reasonable volume if you want. It was a really nice gig and we all enjoyed it quite a bit.

The gig took place in Colonial Heights, VA, which is between Richmond and Petersburg. The venue was an American Legion Hall on a beautiful small river. All of the attendees were people who care for somebody with dementia. It was a night out for them and a chance to get a break from taking care of their loved one for a little while.

We started with drinks and appetizers. I ate a lot of boiled shrimp, which I hadn’t had in a long time. The people were very nice and friendly.

First set was relatively short. We were followed by a pretty hilarious comedienne named June.

After the first set, Wylie, our fabulous guitarist, decided to jump in the river and swim to a huge rock on the other side. We all watched as he effortlessly swam across and then back. I thought about trying to escape the 100-degree heat with a swim, but got involved in a reasoning session with my fellow musicians about how glad we are that Wylie is now playing with us.

We went in and grabbed some dinner. I had salmon and green bean casserole. It was delicious.

The second set was even better than the first. The folks started to cut loose and dance and even formed a conga line that snaked throughout the building.

Afterwards we sold all the rest of our cd’s that we had brought and gave away a bunch of business cards. It was a wonderful way to spend the day.

Our next show is at the Carytown Watermelon Festival on August 8 at 11:45am on the main stage.
